Whilst many know Liz for her thought leadership in security awareness and her quirky flashes of hair colour, she’s a military veteran who had a diverse career in the Royal Air Force, before transferring to the Royal Artillery. Her acknowledgement that her everyday life in the military was extraordinary also nods to the understanding that her leadership experience there can be challenging for those who have never been in that environment.

A serious injury in 2013, immediately following Staff College, turned Liz’s life on its head. It took her out of the standard career path, although within the military environment, as she relearned to walk without a stick and to be herself. A new version.

That injury and subsequent recovery enabled her move into the private sector. Initially having said “not a bank and not cybersecurity”, Liz found her first role, and eventually her best job family fit, with HSBC, in cyber. Every role she’s had since has brought more learning, and often clear parallels with her military experience. Human risk management relies on human factors, all of which lean into her fascinating background.

In this chief’s brief, Martin and Liz will discuss how her experience has helped her navigate the private sector, given her resilience and made her an advocate for mental health and wellbeing as a result.
