The 4th Industrial Revolution has been defined in three ways: scope, velocity, and systems disruption. Nowhere is this more evident than with the emergence of technologies that promise to transform how we work and how we live. Some of this emerging tech has been around for decades, such as machine learning in its myriad forms, while some have arrived in the last decade and are just beginning to make an impact. Others are still in the gestation period but are evolving at a startlingly rapid pace, such as quantum technology. How they will impact us and society is largely a mystery – we can predict, but cannot be sure. What we can be certain of is that emerging tech will impact us economically, politically, and socially.
Arguably, the biggest challenge technological advancements present is change. Change to the way businesses operate; change to the working environment; change to the threats we face and the risks we must balance. Generative AI is improving phishing campaigns, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy through deepfake technology, and enabling malware to identify and exploit vulnerabilities at speed. IoT, with its multiple sensors, often designed without security, is bringing the digital revolution and the threats that come with it to the world of operational technology. Quantum technology is just over the horizon and promises to be the biggest game-changer of them all.
We were delighted to host our second emerging tech event of 2024, where we discussed the impact of emerging tech and how we manage the inevitable change it brings.
