In the modern workplace, compliance-based learning and information dumps have long been the go-to strategies for training employees. But how effective are they really? Let’s be honest – how much do you actually remember from these sessions? It’s okay to say not much. These methods prioritise ticking boxes over genuine understanding, which leaves employees overwhelmed and unable to retain vital information.

In this session, led by Melanie Knight, Learning and Design Lead at Think Cyber, and supported by Lucy Finlay, Delivery Director at Think Cyber, we explored how learning theories and the principles of memory and cognitive load can help us rethink how we approach training.

By understanding how people learn and how their brains process and store information, we can begin to unpack the shortcomings of traditional methods and develop methods that bridge the learning gap.

Learning outcomes:
• Explore how to use learning theories to increase the impact of your training and help employees retain and apply what they learn to their everyday work lives
• Understand how to apply theories about memory and cognitive load to improve learning
• Identify how graphics can help or hinder learning and how to choose imagery that supports your message and adds context
