The MITRE CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exploits) programme is the global foundation for threat assessments. Until recently, the programme has been funded by the US Department of Homeland Security, but days before the new funding cycle was to commence last month, the US Administration made the decision to stop funding – part of their cost-cutting exercise. This caused consternation throughout the cybersecurity world, removing at a stroke one of the key tools in our defence armoury.

This coincided with reduced funding for CISA, the US equivalent of the UK’s NCSC, and a campaign by Trump against CISA’s former CEO Chris Krebs (who immediately resigned from SentinelOne in order to protect the organisation).

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has since relented and agreed to fund the CVE programme for one more year, but its future beyond this remains uncertain.

Watch the session recording of our panel of industry experts as we discussed what has happened, considered the future of the CVE programme, and how losing the programme would affect us all.
