Richard has been CEO of the NCSC since October 2024. Before joining the NCSC, Richard was a Cyber Security Partner and chair of the Cyber Security Practice at PwC UK. Before that, he was Managing Director of Cyber Security for Barclays PLC, responsible for cyber security risk management across the Barclays Group. In 2011, he was seconded to the Cabinet Office to help develop and implement the first national plan for cybersecurity, impacting both government operations and the wider economy. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from Royal Holloway, University of London.
In this special Chief’s Brief, Martin will discuss with Richard his work at NCSC and his plans for the future. Front and centre will be his “When, Not If” strategy, moving the debate beyond mere prevention to focus on response, recovery and resilience across organisations and supply chains. Other topics will include:
• The need for cybersecurity to be a board-level priority;
• Managing risk from partners and suppliers;
• The impact of AI on both threat actor capabilities and defensive measures; and
• NCSC’s initiatives for diversifying the cybersecurity workforce and engaging young people.
They will also debate the implications of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill and other legislation for organisations in both the public and private sectors.
We are hugely privileged that Richard will be sharing with the SASIG community his thoughts and aspirations, and his vision for the future of data privacy and online safety.
