VulnApocalypse or not, are you going to drown? | SASIG

Many unpatched legacy vulnerabilities, an explosion in the number of vulnerabilities, an explosion in the number of monitored software (CPEs), and a reduction in the average time it takes to exploit vulnerabilities (MTTE) — are we facing a tsunami of vulnerabilities, and are we all about to be completely overwhelmed?

Security teams are under increasing pressure as vulnerability volumes continue to rise, digital estates expand, and threat actors exploit weaknesses faster than ever before. Years of accumulated technical debt, combined with growing cloud adoption and more complex software ecosystems, have made effective remediation increasingly difficult.
Yet the real challenge is not simply the number of vulnerabilities, but knowing which ones truly matter. Organisations that adopt risk-based prioritisation, automation and a resilience-focused approach will be better equipped to cut through the noise, focus on the most critical exposures, and stay ahead of rapidly evolving threats.

The question is no longer whether vulnerability volumes will continue to grow, but whether security programmes can evolve quickly enough to meet the challenge.
