As 2023 draws to a close, we can agree it has been a challenging year for all, not least the financial sector. Ransomware continues to pose a significant challenge to organisations in terms of operational resilience. The geopolitical turmoil we witnessed in 2022 has continued. Hamas’ barbarous attack on Israeli civilians in October threatens not just a bloody war in Gaza but wider conflagration across the region – adding further instability to the disruptive impact of the war in Ukraine.

This ongoing uncertainty will inevitably have consequences at home and abroad, and provide much to consider for financial institutions, particularly how these conflicts play out in cyberspace. Will they remain contained, or spread beyond the immediate theatre of war? And what implications could this mean for supply chains, both physical and digital?

Having the right strategy that considers the overall response to cyber threats has never been more critical, whether improving the awareness of our people, planning for the worst, or understanding the impact of external actors on our overall resilience. We considered how organisations in the financial sector can make themselves more resilient against the backdrop of such global uncertainty.
