About this event
During his military career, and in particular his time with 22 SAS, Bankie learned much about why some teams perform extraordinary tasks in extreme circumstances. He will share with us the remarkable secrets of three of these teams. He will explain how in 1991 the 4 x 400m GB Relay team risked all to win Gold at the World Athletics Championships. He will also share his insights and a remarkable documentary video of a rescue mission in Afghanistan that almost ended in complete disaster.
Finally, Bankie will talk about “Operation Nimrod”, the code name of the SAS assault on the Iranian Embassy in London in May 1980 to rescue 26 hostages. Many will remember this event as it was captured on TV and beamed live into our homes. Bankie has worked closely with Rusty Firmin, one of the Assault Team Commanders, and will share his testimony of how that now world-famous rescue operation came perilously close to failure.
