The digitalisation of the power grid promises to accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy system. However, we don’t fully understand how innovative technologies are introduced in legacy infrastructures.
Ola sheds light on advancing digitalisation in the UK energy industry and what we can all learn from this, inside and outside of the energy industry.
We consider how digitalisation initiatives are challenging an established logic of pre-planned and highly assured infrastructure engineering with agile and experimentation-oriented software innovation practices. However, this is not happening without pushback from professionals responsible for safety, stability, and security of the grid.
We also explore how digitalisation is introducing new technologies, and the challenges of how it is also maintaining legacy systems, institutions, and expert collaborations.
